Bangladesh Votes in First Contested Presidential Election in 35 Years
Parliament elected veteran Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the country’s 23rd president on Thursday. Alamgir secured 255 votes, defeating opposition candidate Oli Ahmed, who received 88 votes. The election was conducted by members of parliament with 349 lawmakers eligible to vote. The contest followed the re
signation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin last month. Although Bangladesh’s presidency is largely ceremonial, the vote carries broader significance as the country navigates a major political transition following the BNP’s return to power earlier this year.
