China-West Rivalry Sharpens Across the Indo-Pacific
Beijing has increased its military and maritime presence around Taiwan and disputed waters, while the United States and its allies are strengthening defence cooperation with countries including Japan, the Philippines and Australia. Recent Chinese military exercises and regional naval activity have heightened concerns over a potential confrontation.
At the same time, regional countries are balancing security concerns with economic ties to China. The Philippines, for example, continues to pursue economic cooperation with Beijing despite tensions in the South China Sea. The growing rivalry is making the Indo-Pacific an increasingly important front in global geopolitics with regional governments seeking to avoid conflict while protecting their strategic interests.
