North Korea Escalates Tensions With New Missile Launch
South Korea’s military said the missile was launched from the Wonsan area and traveled about 700 kilometers before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. It was North Korea’s second suspected ballistic-missile test in less than a week. The launch came ahead of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, scheduled for August 17–27.
Pyongyang has repeatedly condemned the drills as a threat to its security. South Korea and Japan denounced the latest launch, while the United States reaffirmed its commitment to defending its ally. The missile test adds to growing military tensions on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea continues to expand its weapons capabilities.
