Syria Sentences Assad Cousin Wasim al-Assad to Death
The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus found al-Assad guilty of premeditated murder and acts of torture classified as war crimes and crimes against humanity. The court also ordered the seizure of his movable and immovable assets. The ruling comes a week after Syrian courts sentenced Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad and other senior figure
s of the former regime to death in absentia. Wasim al-Assad was detained in 2025 and had also faced allegations linked to armed groups and Captagon trafficking. His death sentence adds to a growing series of prosecutions targeting figures associated with the former Assad government as Syria pursues accountability for abuses committed during the conflict.
